Our History.
ITS was founded as a spin-out from the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds, pioneering the commercial use of Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) and Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) for industrial applications.
2001
Founded as a University Spin-Out
ITS was established as a spin-out from the University of Manchester, building on groundbreaking work from the UK’s Technology Foresight programme. Early developments were supported by pilot trials at Du Pont, Schlumberger, Imerys, and AstraZeneca.
2005
Dual Modality Innovation
The M3000 system was released, combining ERT and ECT in a single platform, developed in collaboration with UMIST and the University of Leeds.
2007-2009
New Technologies and Global Growth
Despite global economic pressures, ITS launched the p2+ (ERT) and m3c (ECT), and patented the high-speed Z8000 system. Sales expanded across North and South America, with distributor networks established in 10 key markets.
2012
New Headquarters and Fast Instrument Launch
ITS moved to Sunlight House, doubling its space with expanded lab and R&D facilities. The v5R instrument launched to meet specialist industrial needs, backed by robust new patents.
2014-2015
Major Investment and Global Penetration
Investment from NWF Venture Capital Fund enabled global densitometer rollout, deeper entry into the US and China, and research into rheology, culminating in a new patent..
2020-2021
R&D Pivot During COVID
While the pandemic challenged global sales, ITS used the time to advance R&D—filing an AI-based densitometer patent and beginning development of TOMO 4.0, a next-gen, compact ERT platform.
2024
New Facilities and PFI Spin-Out
ITS launched Process Flow Intelligence (PFI) to offer SMART, non-nuclear density measurement solutions for sectors including dredging and deep-sea mining. The company moved into Dickinson House, a self-contained HQ designed for the next phase of growth.
